Here's a very nice cluster of caramel-colored golden scheelite crystals from China that fluoresce
pure
bright blue under shortwave UV. This is an older specimen that came out in the first wave of Chinese minerals to hit the US market in the 1980s. At that time, locality information was often uncertain. This piece was listed by the original US sellers, Virgin Valley Sales, as coming from the Yaogangxian Mine in Hunan, but to my eye it looks much more like material from the Pingwu Mine, Mt. Xuebaoding,
Pingwu Co., Mianyang, Sichuan, China, which still produces most of the good Chinese scheelite on the market. (Note: prices on early Chinese material were steep; this piece is marked at 0.00 on the original label.)
NOTE: TO VIEW FLUORESCENCE, YOU NEED A QUALITY ULTRAVIOLET LIGHT WITH A UV FILTER!
The better the UV source, the better fluorescent minerals look. Cheap "UV" flashlights without filters will not provide satisfactory results!
The photos here are taken using Convoy S2 and C8 (longwave-365)
and UV Systems SuperBright II (shortwave-254) lamps, metered
and exposed to show fluorescent response to best advantage.
Key factors include lamp wattage, UV spectrum and filtration, as well as distance from lamp to specimen. For best results with any UV source, observe against a dark, non-fluorescent, non-reflective background, in complete darkness with eyes adapted. For extended viewing, use protective UV-absorbing goggles.
