Description

Offered for sale is a complete: ‘Jack and Jill The Magazine for Boys and Girls’.
The magazine has stories, activities, and puzzles for young children.
The front cover is clearly marked December 1938.
There is a blue ink stamping on the cover that says, “Sample Copy”.
Inside the front cover, on the title page, is marked ‘Volume 1’ and ‘Number 2’ which is the second edition.
Jack and Jill was published monthly and the first issue was released Nov. 1938 and this December 1938 release is the second issue of the magazine.
This is from the Curtis Publishing Company in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The magazine measures 10-1/4” x 6-7/8” and has 49 pages.
The magazine has some condition problems.
The cover has marks, stains, and wear.
There are 2 tears with the longest (most noticeable) at the rocking horse’s tail.
The cover is ripped down to the top staple as shown.
Inside the magazine some of the outer page binding is also ripped (though shorter) on some of the outer pages.
Many of the inner pages are stained or have finger smudges.
The 2 staple binding is still holding well at the center though the staples are rusted as shown.
The magazine has many positive attributes including having all of the pages.
There are no pencil or ink written markings and it is not signed by a previous owner.
There are 3 activities found that would lead to cutting pages.
These are the festoon making page, paper doll cutout page, and the ornament making page.
All 3 of these pages are complete and not cut.
The paper doll page has ‘Jack’ by well-known paper doll artist Tina Lee.
The puzzle page has not been done and has no writing.
A December 1938 Jack and Jill Magazine Vol. 1 No. 2 is rare and hard-to-find.
