Description
This multi-colored specimen is originally from the Desert View Mine, San Bernardino County, CA.In daylight the specimen looks like a plain old light grey rock - like something you would never pick up unless you knew what it was (photos #6 & 7). One edge is a cut face, visible in photo #7.
Under short wave lamp the wollastonite glows
bright yellow,
the aragonite a
dull
blue
,
and some calcite
red
(photos #1-3).
We puzzled over the "unknown" mineral that glows beautiful
royal blue
in SW in photo #1 (with no phosphorescence), and we looked the mine up in Mindat. We found that hardystonite is a confirmed species at the mine, and according to the Internet this is the only location in the world, other than New Jersey, where hardystonite has ever been found!
Using our Convoy S2 long wave flashlight, the aragonite glows a cream color in LW (photos #4 & 5).
Weighs 4.4 oz. & measures 2.5 x 1.75 x 1.375 inches (#DV-06).
