RARE WW2 US MARINE CORP MILITARY 3D TOPOGRAPHY MAP SULPHUR ISLAND IWO JIMA JAPAN.
Rare Ww2 Topography Map.  This map was brought back from japan along with some other items by Theodore Johnson.
I have had two appraisals from different auction houses. I am selling myself to avoid the high cost, commission , shipping to auction house, and all the other fees. Estimated value is 5k-10k.
Theodore Johnson :  Not only did he collect military memorabilia but he served in the military also. Ted passed away Wednesday, July 10, 2019. He was born on June 2, 1926, in Des Moines, Iowa.
A little about his service. Upon departure from the US, his travels in the military took him to Nagoya Air Base in Japan, where he was part of the Fukuoka military government team. During that time, he was in Zamboanga City, Philippines and then went back to Japan to finish his time in the military.
THE ATTACK ON IWO JIMA was not something that was planned a year in advance. Ships already out at sea had to make maps with whatever they had avaliable. It's not like they flew a Topography Map to every ship on the ocean. That being said this is a very rare piece of U.S. HISTORY and its prominently hung in my office as it is a discussion piece.
The item you see in the pictures is the actual item you are purchasing. Item appears to be in good condition. Showing very light signs of wear.  This map is 24" by 24" and the wood is 3/8" thick. This map is hand molded to scale. It is hand painted. A few of the labels are missing and some of the plaster has chipped off. The board is a marine grade board typical of the ww2 time period. Theodore's name and number are written on the back. I do not know what the writing on the top side of the board means but it says either "55th ALLERT" or " 55T HALLERT." I dont know much about this map other than it was with other items he brought back from Japan during his time in the service.

This map will ship in a custom wood crate which has been padded to protect this piece.
