WW2 Tarawa Maps. Condition is "New". Shipped with USPS Priority Mail.
For your consideration, this package includes copies of three WW2 maps of the Gilbert Island atoll, specifically Tarawa (Betio). Details as follows:
1) Tarawa Atoll South Central Part....hydrographic map charting the south central portion of the atoll chain showing depths and details of the water areas surrounding the atolls. This measures 18” x 22”
2) Tarawa Atoll (Betio Anchorage)....accompanying map to the first one detailing the specifics of the Tarawa (Betio) anchorage area. This map measures 18” x 20.5”.
3) Pre-invasion map of Tarawa. This is confidential map of Operation Longsuit (the Tarawa portion of Operation Galvanic). Longsuit was the code name and the island on the map is shown as “Helen Island”, again as code for Tarawa. This map was prepared for Joint Intelligence Center in September 1943 based on sorties by the 7th Air Force between January and September 1943. Classification of confidential was to be changed to restricted once forces hit the combat area. I suspect this was used for planning the invasion early on and as more detail became available regarding Japanese positions on the island, they were added. Note: the copy appears to have some tears in the seams but those are from my original......no tears on this copy!
All three maps were printed from original WW2 dated maps. I have the originals......the hydrographic maps are especially crucial and interesting considering the way the battle evolved with early Amtracs getting caught up on the reef, necessitating Marines to hit the lagoon and walk into scathing fire for 600-800 yards. Tarawa was one of the Marine Corps seminal battles of WW2 and the hard lessons learned here would benefit them on subsequent operations.
